The visual effects used in The Matrix were groundbreaking at the time of release and have since been influential on subsequent Hollywood blockbusters. In particular, the "bullet time" sequence, in which time appears to slow down while Neo dodges gunfire, has been endlessly imitated.

The film's innovative use of special effects was not its only selling point, however; The Matrix also features excellent acting from a talented cast. Keanu Reeves is particularly well-suited to the role of Neo, nailing both the character's physicality and his philosophical inquiries. Carrie-Anne Moss is also excellent as Trinity, one of Neo's allies in the real world.

All told, The Matrix is a landmark achievement in science fiction filmmaking. Its story may be derivative and its philosophy far from original, but the film is nonetheless a must-watch for any fan of the genre. And if you're looking for some good old-fashioned entertainment, you'll find plenty of that here too. Just make sure you don't watch it on your phone; this is one movie that really needs to be seen on the big screen.
